About Wild Root

Wild Root turns the bright flavours and practical instincts of a café kitchen into jars designed to earn their place at the table. From Bread & Butter Pickles to vividly pink cauliflower, the range is colourful and contemporary, but its appeal is refreshingly simple: crunch, balance and food that makes other food taste better.

The story of Wild Root

Wild Root's pantry range grew out of recipes first developed and served through its plant-led café in rural Halsall. Founder Charlie began by cooking the food she wanted to eat, testing ideas in a real kitchen and learning from the people ordering them. Popular recipes were refined for retail, creating a direct line from café plate to pantry jar.

That origin still matters. The brand is at its most convincing when the products are used rather than merely displayed: pickles cutting through a rich sandwich, cauliflower lifting melted cheese, kraut bringing acidity and texture to a bowl. The Local has not visited the production site, so process claims remain carefully scoped. Wild Root confirms that its Bread & Butter Pickles and Pickled Pink Cauliflower are prepared, pickled, packed and stored in Halsall.

Meet the people behind Wild Root

Charlie is Wild Root's founder and creative lead. Public company records verify that Charlotte Lily Tomlinson—Charlie's legal name—controls the submitted products company and the older café company. Editorially she should be identified as Charlie. Her story is one of practical recipe development: ideas tested through service, shaped by customer response and then made ready for a wider pantry.

VALUES & SUSTAINABILITY

Flavour first, claims kept honest.

Wild Root's modern identity is built around plant-led food, small-batch preparation and recipes people can use every day. For The Local, the most responsible way to tell that story is with precision. The maker confirms British-sourced cucumber and onion for the Bread & Butter Pickles, but that does not establish the origin of every ingredient or every product. Its cashews are sourced overseas, and broad local or British-grown language is therefore omitted. Health claims and the pending SALSA status are also held until the right evidence exists.

THE LOCAL EDITORIAL

Why we love Wild Root

The two products we tried had the substance to match the packaging. Both tasted exceptionally fresh, with excellent crunch and a clean, lively balance that never tipped into blunt vinegar. Bread & Butter Pickles brought sweetness, acidity and bite to chicken salad; the Pickled Pink Cauliflower was outstanding with mature cheddar on sourdough toast. These are useful ingredients, not decorative condiments.

Explore Lancashire

Lancashire is a county of fertile lowlands, weather-facing coast, upland pasture and towns shaped by industry. Its food culture has always been practical: ingredients grown, preserved, baked and made to feed people well. Today, independent makers are building on that instinct with products that feel both rooted and current.

The Local begins in Halsall with Wild Root, whose café-born pickles bring colour, crunch and a modern plant-led point of view. This is a starter edit and will expand as more Lancashire relationships are verified.

The craft of Preserves

Preserving turns the abundance of a season into something that can be opened and shared months later. Fruit becomes jam, vegetables become chutney, and familiar ingredients gain new depth through sugar, vinegar, spice and patient cooking.

Britain’s independent preserve makers keep this tradition alive while refusing to make it predictable. The best jars balance generosity with precision: full of recognisable ingredients, layered flavour and a strong connection to the places in which they are made.
